There are four main elementary schools in Fruita, including Rim Rock Elementary and Shelledy Elementary School, with approximately 1,470 students; one middle school with 1,135 students and one high school in Fruita with 1,360 students enrolled. Economy and Job Market The economy in Fruita has been growing steadily. The majority of residents in the city are employed in the school system. About 84% of residents own homes while 16% rent with an average household income of approximately $69,000 (as of 2004). The housing growth in Fruita has experienced a boom as well, going from 1,600 in 1990 to 3,500 in 2004. The job market is fairly diverse not only around Fruita, but also the Mesa County area as well. The total employment estimate in Mesa County is approximately 55,900. There are a variety of jobs available around Mesa County from food services to operations managers. Attractions and Points of Interest Aside from Fruita’s famous festivals, the city is also a huge draw for outdoor sports enthusiasts. The nature of the open spaces around the city, especially at the foot of the scenic Colorado National Monument, McInnis Canyons, and Glade Park, are prime camping and hiking spots. Colorado’s Rabbit Valley and North Fruita Desert areas in Fruita include trails for off road biking, motorcycles, and ATVs. The Adobe Creek Golf course is located at the base of the Colorado National Monument for golfers, and water rafters will enjoy rafting along the Colorado River and Westwater Canyon from Fruita. Finally, Fruita also happens to be quite renowned for being a paleontological center of dinosaur excavation activities. The world-famous Museum of Western Colorado's Dinosaur Journey provides fun and educational activities for all ages along trails of paleontological history. |
